"Driven by their desire to be equal citizens and to end their second-class status as a couple these two men tell a heroic tale that has transformed them from accidental activists to proud, active and inspired spokesmen for the legalization of same-sex marriage and the furthering of human rights for lesbians and gays."
The Voice, August 2002

"A story's always better at convincing people of the basic human truth of things than an argument. And this story is fascinating ... This book provides a wealth of literate and sensitive insights."
Bert Archer, The Globe and Mail

"It is doubtful if any human rights cause could find more effective spokesmen than Bourassa and Varnell."
Ottawa Citizen

"[O]ne of the most significant acts of civil disobedience in the history of the Canadian gay rights movement … Just Married clearly acknowledges that as a society, we should be beyond the point of asking whether gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry; instead the book asks how a significant percentage of Canadians can be openly denied this basic legal right in a just and tolerant society."
Books In Canada

"A solid primer on the history of gay rights in this country ... Just Married gives us much personal insight into a very public struggle ... written with conviction."
The National Post

"Just Married paints an intimate picture of this couple's life together ... the reasons why our marriage laws need to be inclusive of same-sex couples becomes patently clear."
The Telegram, St. John's, Newfoundland

"Kind, clever and compassionate."
Michael Coren, The Toronto Sun

"Co-authors Bourassa and Varnell share the fascinating and oft-thrilling story from the perspective of everyday human beings willingly sucked into a political and media vortex ... Deep layers of touching personal anecdotes make the book a compelling read. Love lies at the heart of this tale, nudged by media coverage, political action and religious change."
The Winnipeg Free Press

"[Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell] are the new poster boys for gay rights in Canada, front, centre and very lovingly in your face ... they speak of justice and of times that are a' changing, whether the times like it or not."
Montreal Gazette

"Bourassa and Varnell have eloquently challenged marriage's heterosexual exclusivity. Their actions and their good-natured, well-paced book should help the cause of equal rights for gays and lesbians."
The Edmonton Journal

"A very honest, touching, and at times, heart-wrenching tale ... Bourassa and Varnell accomplished what they set out to do. They put the "human" in human rights ... The book invites the reader in as if one were right there, a heart-beat away, witnessing every step in this most historic pilgrimage ... you cannot begin to appreciate the service that these two men have done all lesbians and gays in Canada until you read their story up-close and personal, the way it was, for them, as only they can describe it ... a definite must-read book."
The Voice

"Just Married traces the political interests, media responses and deep emotions kicked up by the issue ... it has a lot of drive and tracks a key political moment in queer history."
Now Magazine

"Just Married is a book about justice for all, and an eloquent argument for federal legislation that offers equal consideration to all Canadian citizens, including the right to worship as one pleases."
Georgia Straight

"An intriguing tale ... charming ... I doubt that anyone could fail to be moved by their heartfelt, candid account of their sometimes painful struggle to be "normal" in the eyes of God and society."
Winnipeg Sun

"Just Married is a great read. Full of personal details, intriguing thoughts on the concept and a simple, yet somehow profound, plea for unity in this sacrosanct, basic institution."
Montreal Mirror

"An amazing study of political struggles ... a witty eye for detail ... solid and eminently readable."
Midwest Book Review, Wisconsin

"Bourassa and Varnell take what could have been a dry account and instead take the reader on an emotional and touching journey through an event that has changed not only their lives but ours as well."
Trade: Queer Things Magazine

"Just Married is an interesting mix of things personal, emotional, political and legal, and a great read."
Liz Braun, The Toronto Sun

"Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell write with eloquence and deep insight of their journey together which led them to their historic marriage at MCC in Toronto. We gay and lesbian people, whose love for our partners is just as strong, just as real, just as beautiful as that of straight couples, are tired of being treated as second-class citizens in our own land. It is my hope that this moving story will bring us closer to full respect and equality."
Svend Robinson
Member of Parliament
Burnaby--Douglas
Canada

"Human progress, whether social or religious, never comes because the people in charge of things invite the dispossessed to join them. It only happens when the dispossessed themselves take action. … Whoever the dispossessed are, there comes a moment when they lose patience and make their move. That's just what Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell have done. Tired of the arrogance of a system that tells them their love is not one that can be sanctioned and sanctified, they just got on and did it. This book tells us what the future is going to look like, because people like Kevin and Joe are out there making it come true."
Bishop Richard Holloway
Retired Bishop of Edinburgh
and Primus of the Episcopal Church of Scotland

"Through this personal account, we become witnesses to one gay couple's struggle to win the freedom to marry, along with their pastor and members of their church, friends and family, the media, lawyers, the usual right-wing suspects opposing equality, and ultimately, even the Prime Minister and Governor-General of Canada. We are led to ask a question now engaging Canada, Europe, and the United States: 'The couple's in love, their family is happy, the church is ready, their commitment is real ... so why won't Kevin and Joe's government let them get married?'"
Evan Wolfson
Freedom to Marry Project
New York, U.S.A.

«Une lecture agréable donc, qui vous permet de pénétrer en douceur dans les arcanes politiques, légalux et religieux de ce qui constitue sans nul doute l'un des plus grands défis qui attend la communauté gaie au cours des prochaines années: la reconnaissance de notre droit au marriage, le dernier bastion d'intolérance et de discrimination subsistant encore ouvrement dans notre société»
Fugues Magazine (Montreal)

"The book entwines deeply personal sentiments and anecdotes from every day life ... Joe is sure to leave us laughing with his Five Rules About God where he summarizes the results of his first foray into spirituality as a nine-year old growing up in a half-Catholic, half-Protestant family.'"
To Be Magazine

"A compelling human tale - a step-by-step chronicle of a devoted couple whose deeply private commitment became an exceedingly public affair throughout Canada and the world ... their descriptions prove akin to a suspense novel in parts ... a valuable story of commitment and courage, engrossingly told."
Prairie Flame, Illinois

RG Magazine

""I was very surprised with the writing style and content of this book. The book is very well written and is injected with plenty of humour. I was easily drawn into the lives of Kevin and Joe and began rooting for them in their quest to legally marry. These two men did not set out to be activists, they fell into it; it is amazing to me that they managed to go through all that they did with such grace … But Just Married isn't just about Kevin and Joe's personal story, it's about the fight of Canadian lesbians and gays for the right to marry. Much historical, legal and constitutional information is offered up here as well, in an easy to understand format."
Siren Magazine, Toronto

Just Married
Gay Marriage and the Expansion of Human Rights

"Joe Varnell and Kevin Bourassa didn't have to get married. They didn't have to spark a national debate. They didn't have to seek legitimization from Ontario's government. And they didn't have to burden themselves with the campaign. But they did. For the gay couple, the institution of marriage was important enough to take on the crusade ... Varnell's and Bourassa's wedding was an official celebration of two people who'd found their soul mates."
The Toronto Star, June 25, 2021

Just Married is the first hand account of an event that made international news headlines and human rights history in January 2001. By following the Christian practice of reading the banns, which has been incorporated into provincial law, the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto married two same-sex couples, issuing each a marriage licence. The government was challenged to register the marriages in a case that resulted in the Court of Appeal for Ontario ordering the province to register the marriages of Bourassa/Varnell and the Vautours. Ontario began issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples on June 10, 2003.

Despite the political struggle and the glare of the media lights, this remains the powerful and intimate story of two people who chose to make a life together and sought the support of both church and state for their marriage. It demonstrates how two individuals can make a difference, and how personal commitment and political activism are often based in daily life and a sense of family and community.

Illustrated with over a dozen colour photographs, and packed with both humourous anecdotes and provocative insights, this is the moving account of an event that will change the world - not just for Canadians, but for citizens, families, and communities around the globe.

"[I]nstead of making arguments, they've decided to tell a story, the story of the six weeks from the time the Reverend Brent Hawkes of Toronto's Metropolitan Community Church phoned them up and asked them if they wanted to get married, through the reading of banns and the double wedding ceremony in January 2001, and up to the point at which the Ontario government told them it would not register their marriage. It makes sense. A story's always better at convincing people of the basic truth of things than an argument. And this story is fascinating ... And for anyone who still can't quite picture what it's like for two men to be in love, who figure all this gay stuff must really just be about getting laid, by the time they put this book down, they will have had as clear a picture as they could want of the pure, basic and very, very normal love that is possible between two people of the same sex. And they'll get a very good and concise resume of the progress of gay rights in this country over the past few decades thrown in to boot. The authors did their homework.
The Globe and Mail, May 25, 2021

"Varnell and Bourassa are not out of the legal maze yet. But they have set an important precedent. They have knocked down - for now - one of the most daunting barriers confronting same-sex couples."
The Toronto Star - Editorial
July 15, 2021

"Kevin Bourassa and Joe Varnell are two very courageous pioneers blazing a trail that is raising awareness of all that it means to be gay and who are educating, advocating and making this province, and indeed country, a better place to live in for all of us."

Gays, gays, marions-nous!

French Translation of Just Married Les Éditions Internationales Alain Stanké has acquired world rights to the French translation of Just Married. Released today, the French edition is titled Gays, gays, marions-nous! We are thrilled that our book has been published in French, and we feel honoured to have found a home in a company that has published the work of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Jules Verne, Henry Miller, Roch Carrier, and Wilder Penfield (Kevin used to write from the trenches of rock and roll with Wilder Penfield III).

This arrangement was key to our national campaign advocating equal marriage for all couples. Les Éditions Stanké contributes additional tremendous value by bringing our story, and its universal issues, beyond the English-speaking world. As Jerry Shestack, past president of the American Bar Association and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Commission said in Toronto last year: "Human rights do not begin or end at a nation's borders."

Our thanks to Gloria Goodman, Random House, for her effort in making this possible.

Just Married was published in English by Doubleday (Canada) and the University of Wisconsin Press (USA) on June 1, 2002.

Excerpt In Canada's Globe and Mail
The Prime Minister's Letters

The Globe and Mail, a national newspaper in Canada, carried an excerpt from our book today, which they titled "The prime minister's letters". These letters relate to one of the more stressful aspects of our experience during the banns/wedding process and serves as a telling counterpoint to the event's surounding the Governor General's response to the same email.

Thanks to Gloria Goodman.

The second Canadian city on our tour in support of Just Married (Doubleday) was Quebec's charming Montreal. We had the pleasure of meeting with both mainstream and alternative media, reaching millions of people through the eight interviews we did during the day. Then, when the day was done, we were welcomed into the warm home of Quebec same-sex marriage advocates Michael Hendricks and Rene Leboeuf for a conversation-filled dinner together.

We woke up in Turin, had lunch in Amsterdam, followed the sun to Toronto, and had dinner in Ottawa (with Joe singing Happy Birthday to me in each city along the way). It was the beginning of our Canadian book tour in support of Just Married. We began in a most appropriate city - the capital.

June 5 to 8, 2002 - Turin, Italy; Keynote address at International Lesbian and Gay Law Association conference.
