Book Party - Wednesday, June 19, 2002
Toronto

Group of family, friends and supporters gathered in Toronto to celebrate Doubleday's publication of Just Married (Photo by equalmarriage.ca, 2002)We celebrated Doubleday Canada's publication of our book Just Married with family, friends and supporters in Toronto on June 19, 2002. It was a wonderful opportunity to see friends who we've missed over the past year while we worked on our book and other advocacy activities.

Toronto City Councilor Kyle Rae mingled with the guests. (Photo by equalmarriage.ca, 2002)Our parents, some siblings, uncles, aunts and cousins, mingled with friends, fellow marriage advocates (Anne & Elaine Vautour and Gail Donnelly & Barb McDowall), politicians (Toronto city councilor Kyle Rae [photo at left] and Ontario New Democratic Party member of provincial parliament for our riding, Marilyn Churley), supporters (Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, the law firm McGowan Elliott and Kim), and the great people from Doubleday.

Michael Scrivener works lights (right) with dj James K who provided music for the night (Photo by equalmarriage.ca, 2002)The evening began at 7:00 p.m., and the room quickly neared its capacity. The bar was kept busy, the food was enjoyed, and dj James K (Government and the 11th Hour), assisted by Michael Scrivener, played a mix of music programmed for the theme of love and human rights. James K will also be providing the music programmed for our float in the Toronto Pride parade on June 30, 2002.

Kevin Bourass signing a copy of Just Married. (Photo by Ken Tong, 2002)We spent the next two hours chatting with friends, some of whom we have not seen in many months, and signing books. The evening seemed to fly by and before long it was time to close the evening down. We didn't really get to thank all the people we wanted to (but they know who they are, and now thanks to the publication of the book, so do a lot of other people).

Thanks to Stephanie Gowan, publicity manager, Doubleday, for arranging this great evening, James K for providing the music, John Thompson for setting up and taking down the signage, and Glad Day Bookshop for promoting Just Married and for donating $340.18 (a portion of the evening's book sales) to the Equal Marriage Fund.
