Harper sends gays to the back of the bus
World Sikh Organization offended by bigotry

The World Sikh Organization (WSO) called Stephen Harper's "discrimination against homosexuals" offensive to the Canadian spirit and urged him - and others who oppose equal marriage - to act in a manner consistent with Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Harper took a hard line against same-sex marriage issue in the House of Commons [Wednesday] calling for the legislation to be changed to exclude gay and lesbian people from being able to marry each other.

"Since the 15th century, Sikhs have given their very lives to protect religious freedoms around the world," said Anne Lowthian, executive director of the WSO. "Extending the same civil rights and freedoms to those with whom you disagree is not only the cornerstone of Sikhism; it is the foundation of democracy in Canada."

The World Sikh Organization has consistently urged all Canadians, irrespective of their political, religious or cultural affiliation, to stand against injustice and to insist that their elected politicians act in a manner that is consistent with Canada's Constitution.

"Sending homosexuals to the back of the bus in Canada is wrong; it sends the wrong message to our fellow Canadians, it sends the wrong message to our international partners with whom we hope to trade," Ms Lowthian said. "Whether we like it or not, refusing homosexuals equality in all aspects of Canadian society can only be viewed as willful ignorance of the lessons of our own rich and diverse history. To assert otherwise is to unashamedly insult the very communities who have worked so hard for decades to protect Canada's Charter."

"What a shame that Mr. Harper cannot distinguish a Muslim from a Sikh, a right from a wrong, or a personal ideology from a civil right," Ms Lowthian added.
