Equality Scorecard
Free vote for marriage

"MPs may think gays are such a small minority that giving them the equivalent of a boot to the ribs of a broken man in a park at night won't lose them many votes, but it will. Canadians think gay marriage is okay. Furthermore, they don't like bullying and the brutes who do it. Any MPs who join the gay-bashing gang are going to suffer in the next election ..."
The Globe and Mail, August 9, 2003

As politicians continue to debate whether or not to treat gay and lesbian couples as persons living under the protections of the Canadian Charter, it has become important to track their responses to the marriage challenge. Clayton Chrusch, a computer science student in Hamilton who is planning to marry his partner of four years this fall, has created a web page in an attempt to track their likely or expressed plans for the Parliamentary free vote on equal marriage.

This is an opportunity for all of us to hold our politicians accountable for their treatment of gay and lesbian couples. History will show who stood on the side of equality, and who cast their vote for bigotry and prejudice. Please join us in defending the rights of our Charter. Use Clayton's equality scorecard to express your support or displeasure with your local member of parliament.
