May 1, 2021 Hello, I just wanted to let you know that I, for one, fully support same-sex marriage. I don't know who will read this email or if anything I say here can be of any help or use in this struggle for basic human rights, but I want you to know that if you find any of my comments useful, you are welcome to use them in your campaigns to win a victory for this cause. I believe that our religious and world leaders have knowingly plunged our world into its current state of war, devastation and chaos. In this hellish time on our planet, the union of any two people who choose to be together for love and mutual respect is a blessing, and is becoming increasingly rare in our sick world of spousal abuse, divorce, etc... I have given a lot of thought to the defence of same-sex marriage when faced with the arguments supporting 'traditional' marriage. I am no expert, but since most of those 'traditional marriage' arguments seem to be stemming from a 'Christian' basis, here are a few of my thoughts. If 'Traditional' marriage is defined by the bible, then why not use the bible itself as a defence? The first thing that comes to mind is the parable where Jesus saves the prostitute from being stoned to death "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". Since no one in the hostile crowd was 'without sin' no one cast a stone. There are many, many other phrases that we use to represent the same concept 'People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones', 'The pot calling the kettle black', etc... If I wanted to get the point across to the supporters of 'Traditional' marriage, I would ask them who among them is without sin? The ten commandments are a very precise set of laws including no lying, no adultery and no 'coveting thy neighbour's wife'. I wonder how many of these 'Traditional' marriage supporters can say that they have never done any of these three things within the confines of their marriage. From my understanding of the historical Christian definition of 'Traditional' marriage, the husband and wife would have to fill all the following criteria in order to qualify :
And if we really want to push the 'Traditional' marriage definition, we can go further :
I know this all sounds a bit ridiculous but really, isn't that the point? If we could just make the point to these prejudiced, narrowminded people that their wonderful 'Traditional' marriage doesn't even exist in this world anymore, maybe some of their followers would see how ludicrous and anti-Christian their objections are (remember, Christ taught love, acceptance and tolerance, not hate and prejudice). Most people will jump on a bandwagon without thinking anything through. That's what gives religious leaders their power. They use fancy, cool phrases to get everybody all riled up but, if you were ever to ask a member of the congregation why they held that viewpoint, many would only be able to say 'Because the minister said so'. If you give the lay-people a clear picture of the truth, hopefully some of them will change their minds. Like I said before, this may all be of no use to you but I do believe that this type of argument can go a long way to undermining the 'Traditional' marriage platform. Honestly, if nobody in their own organisation is following the rules of 'Traditional' marriage, how in Heaven's name can they justify their condemnation of the gay and lesbian community under the same blanket? Well, I sure hope that some of these ideas can help. Good luck with the Cause. The more loving, devoted, faithful couples there are in the world, the less death, war and violence there will be. Let's make a difference, one wedding at a time!
